Forest Plantations
The coastal and soil conservation plantations of Casuarina spp. were taken up in early 1950s. During the second Five Year Plan small scale plantation of Salmalia malbaricum for match wood, sabai grass for paper, Acacia catechu for Katha was taken up. After the formation of Forest Development Corporation in 1962, large scale plantations of commercial species like Tectona grandis, Eucalyptus spp., Dalbergia sissoo started. The important plantation programmes include Coastal shelterbelt plantantation and River valley catchment plantation. Plantation activity further got a fillip after launching of externally aided Social Forestry Project in 1983. About 1.83 m ha area has been brought under plantations in the state since independence.
